COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
In the great majority of the communities where we work, there is a strong demand for affordable personal growth and leadership seminars, artisan training (marketable crafts & cooking), and youth activities. In order to meet these demands, many of the local clinics also serve as community gathering places where groups of interested individuals from the community come to receive courses.

In some clinics such as Pantoja, Los Ríos and Villa Mella, local patients and community members have formed groups from 10 to 40 members who come to the clinic regularly to participate in seminars and workshops. Since the year 2001, local foundation member Alma Portorreal has met with groups of local adults to deliver a wide range of self-help and educational talks. Another example of local educational sessions is the candle making workshops which have been carried out with the participation of local women in the Pantoja clinic.

Another example is the summer camp which has been held in the Pantoja clinic since 2001. The clinic supervisor Mercedes Santos organizes a two month day camp for a group of local children (7 - 12 years old) and adolescents (13 - 18 years old). There is currently a large community demand for the clinic and in 2009, 100 children and 50 adolescents participated in the camp held in a newly constructed educational facility. During the summer camp the groups participate in fun activities as well as receiving important educational themes focused on issues that the youth identify as being important to them. The day camp is an excellent opportunity for vulnerable youth to participate in safe activities in a controlled environment as well as to develop a strong peer group.

Over 100 children and 50 youths participated in the 2010 Pantoja summer camp. This successful initiative was started by the local supervisor with the help of Japan International Cooperation Agency interns.
