COMPUTER   TRAINING
One of the most successful and highly demanded programs operated by the Smiles Foundation is the CompuCom computer education program. CompuCom is a community oriented computer education program which offers quality computer training and health education to local youth. The CompuCom program was inaugurated in the year 2000 with the funding from Presbyterian World Service and Development, and since then has been maintained through a sustainable mixed model of donations and student co-payments.

The principle goal of CompuCom is to create stronger communities by providing educational opportunities to youth who do not receive similar opportunities in local public schools. Youth equipped with computer skills will be more likely to advance further in their academic careers as well as find meaningful employment. Students study an ample program focusing on Microsoft Office and Windows which contains modules focused on, Word, Excel, Power Point, the internet, and touch typing.

During the course, students learn about dental health, nutrition, children’s rights, personal hygiene, drug abuse, and STI prevention. At the end of the course, students form groups and prepare a final project focused on one of the educational themes which they then diffuse within the community.

Currently there are two CompuCom centers, one located in the San Felipe which was opened in 2006 and one located in Pantoja opened in 2009. Both centers are completely equipped with 20 computers, a digital projector and screen, and electrical generator to cover blackouts. Due to great local demand, courses at both locations have recently been expanded to include mature students.
