PUBLICATIONS & VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

LOCATION

Based in Toronto, Canada

EDUCATION

Be enrolled in or have attained some form of post-secondary education

LANGUAGE ABILITY

Fluent in English and Spanish (writing as well as speaking)

EXPERIENCE AND / OR KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

  • Knowledge and interest in international development
  • Previous international experience
  • Experience in leadership roles
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Computer skills
  • Previous experience working with volunteers as asset

TIME OF COMMITMENT

    Minimum 3 months

DUTIES:

  • Liaison between the Toronto office and the volunteers in the Dominican Republic.
  • Orient new volunteers to Sonrisas in the Dominican Republic
  • Provide support to volunteers as required
  • Create a quarterly newsletter in Spanish to distribute amongst volunteers, staff and supporters regarding the work being done in the programs
  • Travel throughout the country to visit the volunteers

VOLUNTEER ROLES - COMMUNITY OUTREACH

PURPOSE of the ROLE

To assist the Fundraiser/Event Coordinator with increasing public awareness and support of surrounding communities

DUTIES:

  • Approach different social clubs and centres to arrange for presentations on Smiles Foundation
  • Approach retirement homes to arrange for presentations on Smiles Foundation
  • Assist the Fundraiser/Event Coordinator with arranged presentations
  • Prepare follow-up thank you letters for institutions where presentations are arranged
  • Maintain database of locations of presentations
  • Maintain database of all institutions approached
  • Sell Smiles Foundation promotional items at presentations

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency with computer applications (MS Access an asset)
  • Reliable and punctual outgoing and friendly
  • Articulate and comfortable dealing with the public

TIME COMMITMENT

A minimum of 6 hours a week with flexibility to attend presentations. Seasonal volunteers welcome.

VOLUNTEER ROLES - PUBLICATION COORDINATOR

PURPOSE of the ROLE

To assist the Fundraiser/Event Coordinator with the design of publications

DUTIES:

  • Design newsletters, brochures, flyers, annual reports, etc.
  • Maintain portfolio of all publications produced

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency with computer applications such as Microsoft Publisher
  • Reliable and punctual outgoing and friendly
  • Articulate and comfortable dealing with the public

TIME COMMITMENT

A minimum of 4 hours per week. Time may vary throughout the year.

VOLUNTEER ROLES - EVENT COORDINATOR

PURPOSE of the ROLE

To assist the Fundraiser/Event Coordinator with planning and coordinating events

DUTIES:

  • Develop a database of companies to approach for sponsorship
  • Print and mail requests for sponsorships
  • Contact media to advertise event
  • Promote event through faxing and emailing flyers
  • Sell tickets for the event
  • Maintain database of tickets sold

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency with MS Office
  • Reliable and punctual outgoing and friendly
  • Articulate and comfortable dealing with the public

TIME COMMITMENT

A minimum of 8 hours per week. Time may vary depending on upcoming events. Seasonal volunteers welcome.

VOLUNTEER ROLES - FUNDRAISING COORDINATOR

PURPOSE of the ROLE

To receive in-kind donations of dental and office equipment and supplies to ship to the Dominican Republic

DUTIES:

  • Prepare tax receipts for donations received
  • Follow up with individuals and companies that would like to donate items
  • Approach dental companies for in-kind donations
  • Arrange for pick-up of items with DeBoer's Furniture

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency with MS Office
  • Reliable and punctual outgoing and friendly
  • Articulate and comfortable dealing with the public

TIME COMMITMENT

A minimum of 8 hours per week.

VOLUNTEER ROLES - MEMBERSHIP COORDINATOR

PURPOSE of the ROLE

To assist the Fundraiser/Event Coordinator with increasing membership of Smiles Foundation

DUTIES:

  • Recruit new members through community outreach, direct mail, etc.
  • Process Smiles Foundation membership applications and prepare membership correspondence.
  • Print and mail member newsletters and direct mail pieces.
  • Keep members informed through periodic telephone calls or letters.
  • Print and mail membership renewals
  • Maintain membership database
  • Sell Smiles Foundation promotional items to members

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency withcomputer applications (MS Access an asset)
  • Reliable and punctual outgoing and friendly
  • Articulate and comfortable dealing with the public
