  • Solid knowledge of dental care techniques such as Preventive Dentistry, Chair-side Assisting, Periodontics, Radiology, An aesthesia, Restorative, Cavities Diagnosis, Prosthodontics, Principles of Pharmacology, Orthodontics, Pathology.
  • Interest & ability to share knowledge & skills with others.

2 Weeks to 1 Year

DUTIES:

This position may involve direct patient care, but the key role of the dental professional volunteer is to provide ongoing training to the local clinic staff in any of the following areas:
Preventive Dentistry, Chair-side Assisting, Periodontics, Radiology, Anaesthesia, Restorative, Cavities Diagnosis, Prosthodontics, Principles of Pharmacology, Orthodontics, Pathology

COMPUTER TRAINING (Compu-Com Sonrisas)

LOCATION

Santo Domingo (Herrera or Pantoja)

EDUCATION

Be enrolled in or have attained some form of post-secondary education

LANGUAGE ABILITY

Fluent in English and Spanish

EXPERIENCE AND / OR KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

Ample knowledge of computers and software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, E-mail
Knowledge of health prevention issues
Teaching or working with youth an asset

LENGTH OF COMMITMENT

2 Weeks to 1 Year

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Prepare lesson plans
Teach groups of children from 6-12 years old how to use computers, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet searching, e-mail, and web design. (Up to three days per week for 1-1 ½ hours at a time)
Group size is between 10-20 children

HEALTH/ SOCIAL/ ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Excellent interpersonal skills.
Creativity in developing lesson plans for
adults and children in health, social or
environmental topics.
Computer skills an asset

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Research current health, social and/or
environmental issues in the Dominican
Republic using participatory rural appraisal within selected communities
Prepare lesson plans
Train the educators on the new lesson plans
Monitor the classes of the educators


SUMMER CAMP AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

LOCATION

Pantoja, Santo Domingo

EDUCATION

Be enrolled in or have attained some form of post-secondary education

LANGUAGE ABILITY

Fluent in English and Spanish

EXPERIENCE AND / OR KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

Experience in teaching or working with
children or youth
Creative and resourceful to plan activities
for children

LENGTH OF COMMITMENT

2 Weeks to 1 Year

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Plan and carry out creative activities for
groups of children, which may include sports, dance, drama, art and crafts or other activities depending on the volunteer's interests and experience
Group size is between 10-20 children

ESL PROGRAM

LOCATION

Santo Domingo (Herrera or Pantoja)

EDUCATION

Be enrolled in or have attained some form of post-secondary education

LANGUAGE ABILITY

Fluent in English and at least intermediate level Spanish

EXPERIENCE AND / OR KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

Take initiative and be flexible
Experience teaching English as a second
language or working with youth an asset
Creativity in creating lesson plans for youth

LENGTH OF COMMITMENT

3 Months to 1 Year

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Become familiar with the teaching resources provided and source other resources prior to arrival in the Dominican Republic
Prepare lesson plans and tests
Lead dynamic and interactive English classes for groups of 10 to 20 youth in the afternoons after school (approximately 15 hours per week not including preparation time)
Make the local youth aware of the program
Screen youth for level of English ability and divide the students into classes by level.
